Since 1903

Mississippi Bar is the former site of extensive mining and dredging operations along the American River that long predate Folsom Dam and Nimbus Dam. For thousands of years before that, it was part of a much larger area that was home to the Nisenan. For more information about the Nisenan and how to provide support today, please visit https://www.nisenan.org/.

Now, Mississippi Bar, which lies between the two dams, is a much-used part of Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. I captured this flower, which since 1903 the state has claimed as its own, early one morning here, along that stretch of the American River now referred to as Lake Natoma.
