FAQ

Currently just some questions I asked myself, and only once, so please hurry and email me a bunch of questions so this heading will be accurate: bert@bertcraig.com.

Q

Do you take edit requests, such as a different cropping or to convert from color to black and white, for custom versions of your images?

A

Intriguing question. I would certainly consider them, and I’d probably agree, as long as I felt that the changes resulted in a successful image.

Q

How old are you?

A

I was born in 1961. As my grandmother used to say, politely, “You do the math.”

Q

Who’s your favorite photographer?

A

I’m not good with “favorites” questions, but here are a few whose work I love: Imogen Cunningham, Robert Mapplethorpe, Diane Arbus, Fernando Socorro, Isle Bing, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Thomas Knight, and Viviane Sassen.

Q

In your photograph “Fork (and Knife) Over Spoon,” did you lie about the vegan Jackalope stew, or was that a real choice on the menu?

A

“Lie” is such a harsh word. Sadly, I was joking. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they really offered that on the menu?!

Q

Why do you like brick and stone so much?

A

Hmmm… They are of the earth? They are tough and age well? They often represent a ton of hard work? They are simply cool and beautiful? Probably all of the above.

Q

In your photograph “Right On Time,” isn’t the George Bernard Shaw quote about the rain, not the trains?

A

Yes.

Q

What’s your philosophy of photography?

A

I have so many, where do I start?:

  1. Press the shutter button first and ask questions later.
  2. Try to capture the essence of your subject.
  3. Beauty is truth, truth beauty (thank you, John Keats).
  4. Do as little harm as possible.
  5. Do good as often as you can.
  6. More often than not, less is more.
  7. Isolate form.
  8. Avoid absolutes.
  9. Stuff isn’t always what it seems.
  10. Simple doesn’t suck.
Q

Are you available for hire? (E.g., do you do weddings, portraits, trade shows or other events, product photography, photomicrography, aerials, drone work, underwater photography, fashion, boudoir, etc., etc., etc.).

A

No. I just shoot what I like, and if other people like it too, yay!

Q

Do you take commissions?

A

Probably not. But if you have access to some rare place, thing, property, structure, etc. that few people have access to and that you think I might think is cool (exceptionally beautiful or otherwise intriguing), send me an email and maybe we can work something out.
