They Built Ships Here

This building was part the first US naval base and shipyard on the west coast, which operated here for 142 years starting shortly after California became a state. A couple of fun facts:

1. In the 1960s they built – and then accidentally sank – a submarine here.

2. This former base also holds the oldest US golf course west of the Mississippi River.
