The Roll-up

This is a close-up of the top section of the inside of my grandmother and grandfather’s front door, which had a window in it. You can’t see the window, but the bumpy section at the bottom is part of the rolled up window blind.

As a kid, I loved rolling that blind up and down – much to my grandparents displeasure, I imagine. I also loved the old 1-bath cinderblock house it was attached to. I was fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time there when my grandmother was much older, living alone and needing help.

Later I was less fortunate to see that it had been demolished and replaced with a McMansion, which by definition was artless and did not speak well about the character of its owners.
