Subtle Staples

The staples contribute to a sense of scale here. I wonder what they were used for. I wonder if the wood pieces were orginally intended to hold the staples or if they were for some other purpose. The railcar is from the steam locomotive era, and the invention of the stapler and the bendable staple overlap that era, so I guess anything’s possible here. I am a little thrown by the random pattern of the staples though.
