Many Years
In 1966, the University of California purchased a few single-story metal buildings to accommodate the learning and support needs of the upcoming surge of new students who would comprise UC Davis’ inaugural medical school class, due to arrive in 1968. Over half a century later, long after the med school moved to shiny new digs across campus, and later to Sacramento, these “temporary” buildings (Aren’t all building temporary?), cleverly called “Surge I,” “Surge II,” etc., were still housing critical campus operations and were still slated for “imminent” removal. (Last rumor I heard was 2028.) In the sometimes stressful Southwest corner of Surge II, tucked behind an office door, was a small window. One day, it helped make this photograph.
