Loops and Lights
Frank Lloyd Wright designed an opera house as part of a larger project for Baghdad, Iraq. The project ended with the fall of the Hashemite monarchy in 1958, and the opera house was never built. About that time, Wright’s friend Grady Gammage, then president of Arizona State University (ASU), wanted to build a world-class performance venue on the ASU campus.
The 3,000-seat ASU Gammage, built off a modified version of the opera house plans, was completed in 1964 and was Wright’s last public commission. It is the only Frank Lloyd Wright building in Arizona built as a public venue.
These lights stretch out along one of the two arm-like elevated walkways that extend from opposite sides of the circular building.
