Life

Our first stroll from the Museum of Modern Art through Yerba Buena Gardens to Super Duper Burgers on Mission Street (they have a great vegan burger, by the way) led my partner and me to this stunning edifice. Striking as this image of the Contemporary Jewish Museum (CJM) may be, it doesn’t begin to capture the building’s design, history, or heart, nor the contributions the museum makes to society. If anything, the image’s ominous quality gives a misleading impression. The image was intended to stand alone, but the iconic nature of the building probably makes it all but impossible to separate the image from the museum. You can learn more about the CJM and the building on their website (https://www.thecjm.org/), where they explain that, “…the building’s unusual shape is derived from the Hebrew letters, chet and yud, which together spell chai, the Hebrew word for “life”.”
